Unfortunately, Matt started coming down with the crud last Thursday. He did his best to rest as much as he could, but agreed by the end of the weekend that the fatigue was unlike other illnesses we have had in recent years.
Except for Anna and Ethan, no one else had a fever. No one experienced the chills and body aches that are characteristic of the flu, just extreme fatigue and a rough cough. We are all hoping that we don't have anything quite so debilitating in the final weeks/months of cold and flu season.
But what about the rest of life? Well, Anna was supposed to have her tear duct procedure last Monday, but we needed to reschedule it due to her fever. This past Thursday turned out to be a busy day. Ethan was dragged along to my dentist appointment before we picked Anna up from school. Then he was able to spend lunch and playtime at a friend's house while Anna and I trekked to the eye doctor (again). The procedure went quickly and smoothly, with more than one professional in attendance commenting that they should have Anna make videos of these kinds of procedures to show other kids how it's done :) We even had time to stop at McDonald's to grab some lunch for Anna to eat at therapy that afternoon.
So far so good for the plugged tear ducts. Anna's eyes haven't been weeping, which it is the first indicator that she NEEDED this procedure. Now we have to wait about a month until the surfaces of her eyes heal and see if it makes a difference in her vision. The doctor told us it would be a good sign if she starts seeing double again. That would mean that her brain is recognizing the images from her left eye again. We have another appointment set up in about a month for the ophthalmologist to check in with Anna.
Since Matt was down and out for the weekend, we tried to get out of the house when we could, to give him the opportunity to rest uninterrupted. Saturday afternoon the kids and I spent an hour or so at "the wheelchair park".
Even though Anna doesn't use her wheelchair anymore, the surface of this park is much more friendly to assistive devices than that of a typical playground. Miss Anna chose to use her crutches for the whole time. Way to go, Anna!
Kate and Ethan have spent several afternoons playing outdoors in the sunshine and relative warmth. Anna has joined them some, but it's still pretty muddy out there and the other two move a lot faster than she does. I have a feeling that we may have some adjustments to make again when spring hits and Kate and Ethan want to spend more and more time outside playing.
But that time hasn't hit just yet. In fact, we got another round of snow Monday night, that everyone was energized to play in after school.
And then a little sprinkling on Tuesday night, too, that the kids tried to shovel off of the driveway on Wednesday morning.
At least this winter has provided us with a lot of variety in terms of weather!
